Chapter ten

Intermediate Openings for White

In the previous chapter, I introduced some of the criteria for choosing which openings to play and my philosophy for getting an advantage out of the opening at the intermediate level. Before we continue, it’s important to point out that this is not an openings book. You already have a sense of how much preparation is needed to learn specific openings in any depth, which is why there are entire books dedicated solely to individual openings for both White and Black. My aim here is to give you the tools and framework to choose the right openings for you and provide practical ways to advance your understanding of them.

To do that, I’m going to relay my recommendations for White and Black openings that can be very effective as you move into intermediate level, based on my ten-plus years of experience as a chess teacher. You might try what I recommend only for it to fail in spectacular fashion because it’s not a good fit for your personality and style of chess. That’s absolutely fine. The main lesson here is to give you a sense of what goes into learning any opening in detail—whether or not you end up playing the examples I use. Learning about your options and then putting them to the test through trial and error (and playing a lot!) will help you sort out what openings work best for you.
